Reader poll, Spring 2022 | Choose your next adventure (grab bag edition)

It’s been awhile since I’ve had a reader poll! Starting in Spring 2014, I used to do twice-yearly reader polls, for readers to choose what reel librarian movie I would analyze next. The last reader poll was in Fall 2018, when y’all chose the classic 1958 horror film, Horror of Dracula, for me to analyze. And some of my favorite posts have been reader poll analysis posts, including:

For reader polls in the past, I’ve done themes (like the “scary movie edition” theme in Fall 2018, and the “romantic adventure” theme in Spring 2018), but for this reader poll, I’ve rounded up a grab bag of reel librarian movies that I have had on my “drafts” list for ages, which is my list of reel librarian movies that I have watched before but need to re-watch in order to take notes and analyze. The following movies vary widely in the year they were released, subject matter, and genre… a true grab bag!

I’ve pulled together the following five movies, arranged alphabetically by title, and the poll is at the bottom of this post.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

This classic romantic comedy is based on the novella by Truman Capote. Free spirit Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) finds love with writer Paul Varjak (George Peppard). There are a couple of scenes set in the New York Public Library with a very agitated public librarian!

I have a personal copy of this movie, plus I have streaming access via Hoopla.

An Extremely Goofy Movie (2000)

In this animated movie, Goofy’s son, Max, goes to college. However, Goofy loses his job and then joins Max on campus. Max tries to ditch his dad in the library by introducing him to the head librarian, Sylvia. There are several funny scenes in the library.

I have a personal copy of this movie, plus I have streaming access via Disney+.

The Park Bench (2016)

In this romantic comedy by writer-director Ann LeSchander, Emily (Nicole Hayden) is a tutor and is studying to be a librarian. She is assigned to tutor Mateo (Walter Perez), and they do not get along at first. But then they start sharing personal stories through the books they’ve read, and they realize they have more in common than they realized. This movie has a mix of live action with animated segments.

I have streaming access to this movie via Hoopla.

The Time Machine (2002)

This is another movie version based on the classic novel by H. G. Wells. In this sci-fi action-adventure film, a disillusioned inventor (Guy Pearce) builds a time machine and travels 800,000 years into the future. He encounters Vox (Orlando Jones), a holographic librarian, who supplies him with information about time travel and the history and evolution of the planet and its population.

Note: I’ve written about Vox in other posts (e.g., 5 movies featuring Black reel librarians in major roles, Reel librarians and archivists in 16 sci-fi films, and Stylish male reel librarians), but I’ve never fully analyzed this movie before for the blog!

Wonder Man (1945)

Based on the short story by Arthur Sheekman, this musical comedy stars Danny Kaye in a dual role. Nightclub singer Buster Dingle gets killed by a mob boss, and his spirit enters his identical twin, Edwin, a bookworm writing a history book. Edwin then gets involved with a young librarian, Ellen (Virginia Mayo).

I have a personal copy of this movie, and I have streaming access to this movie via Amazon Prime.
